Domestic Flights During Lunar New Year Holidays

(1)The fourteen days, starting from January 25 to February 7, 2006, is the emphasized air transportation period for the 2006 Lunar New Year Holidays. During that time, there were 5,834 flights, which provided 581,179 seats and carried 400,492 passengers. The average passenger-carrying rate is 69%.

(2)Flights within the island of Taiwan: there were 2,727 flights, which provided 344,956 seats and carried 221,863 passengers. The average passenger-carrying rate is 64%. The traditional homecoming days of January 27, 28 and 30 and end-of-holiday traffic days of February 2 and 5 are the busiest days for flight. However, the airlines had arranged extra flights in advance, most of the travelers could reach their destination smoothly.

(3)Flights between Taiwan and off-shore islands: Since sea transportation takes longer time, air transportation is the first choice for those who live in Kinmen, Magong and Matzu to go home. In 2006 Lunar New Year Holidays, January 27, 28, 30 and February 2 and 5 also are the busiest days for flight. Since the airlines had arranged extra flights in advance and the airport also took the initiative to coordinate extra flights according to needs of the travelers, all the airlines were cooperative to transport the passengers. The statistics of each off-shore island route is as follows:

1.Kinmen: there were 1,125 flights, which provided 107,921 seats and carried 82,491 passengers. The average passenger-carrying rate is 76%. Most travelers went home on January 28. To accommodate the needs, Sung Shan airport arranged five extra flights on that single day. Both Sung Shan and Kinmen airports established single window to take care of the standby passengers and the initiative to coordinate extra flights or larger airplanes.

2.Magong (Pescadores): there were 1,542 flights, which provided 111,896 seats and carried 83,075 passengers. The average passenger-carrying rate is 74%. To accommodate the travelers’ needs, Sung Shan airport arranged three extra flights on January 28. Magong airport also established single window to take care of the standby passengers and the initiative to coordinate extra flights or larger airplanes.

3.Matzu: there were 276 flights, which provided 13,290 seats and carried 10,627 passengers. The average passenger-carrying rate is 80%. There were a few flights canceled because Nangan and BeiGan airports were closed due to bad weather conditions. Both airports advised the travelers to use sea transportation. The airlines also provided extra flights when the airports were reopened.

Overall, the air transportation during Lunar New Year Holidays is smooth and satisfactory.
